RED January Day 1: unseasonably mild for a run in the park
Cadence is a metric often monitored by some participants in what is known as
parkrun!
And morning haze can be avoided if you get your trainers on of a Saturday for what is known as
parkrun!
So where else can you get a nice, sociable, organised 5km run on a Saturday morning to kick off your weekend? Yes, it's the good old parkrun (I know, it should have a capital, but that's the way they write it). To be honest, I don't get the opportunity to do parkrun very often as it clashes with one of the highlights of the week, my Step Aerobics class at Real Group X in Ossett. However, this week, the Step class was moved to Friday (New Year's Eve), which I couldn't make anyway, so I had to find an alternative activity to kick off RED January. This year, New Year's Day was Saturday, so a good chance to reacquaint myself with my local public green space.

Fortunately I'd woken early enough, but was still feeling the effects of the night before (and I don't mean the horror of Ed Sheeran appearing on Jools Holland's Hootananny last night, though that memory will linger with me longer than a fart in the International Space Station). I had consumed a lot of booze, it has to be said, so was a little hungover. But. it was WARM. I mean, not just mild, but downright warm at around 14°C. So much so it was a day for short sleeves (my RED January t-shirt that arrived a couple of days ago) and, you've heard of the Black Panther, well, it was time for the Ginger Serval to make an appearance, so my Sahara Sunset Tiki capris just had to be worn (one of my absolute favourite designs).

It's a bit cottony for my liking
After being bitten by a radioactive medium-sized wildcat when a teenager, I came to realise that with great leggings come great reponsibility

I remembered my barcode (I can't actually forget it as it's on the key fob for my car keys), got into the car and headed to Thornes Park. I did my run in one of my slowest times, but felt way more fresh at the end than the the slightly nauseous, sleep deprived state I felt at the start. I saw a friend from my running club at the start (Hi Paul🙋) and also bumped into another friend, also from my running club, who had been marshalling and chatted to her for a while (Hi Juls🙋). I discovered after the event that my brand new FitBit Charge 4 hadn't recorded my run, but fortunately I'd set Strava on my phone running which caught it, as you can see below.
On the way to the car after the run It were positively balmy |
My official time was 27:36. My knee held out, so bring on Day 2
